INDIAN FRYBREAD RECIPE

Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • - 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • - ½ tsp salt
  • - ½ tsp baking powder
  • - 1 cup warm water
  • - Oil for frying

Instructions

  • Cooking Instructions:
  • In a medium bowl, combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix well to guarantee that all dry ingredients are evenly distributed.
  • Gradually add warm water to the dry mixture. Stir until the dough begins to form.
  • Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth, about 5-7 minutes. After kneading, let the dough rest for 5 minutes.
  • Roll the dough into circles approximately 7 inches wide and ¼ to ⅛ inch thick. Make sure the dough is evenly rolled out to guarantee even frying.
  • Heat oil in a cast iron skillet or deep frying pan to a temperature of 350-375°F. Carefully place the rolled dough into the hot oil, laying it away from your body to prevent splashes.
  • Fry the dough for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until it turns golden brown. Use tongs to flip the frybread carefully.
  • Once cooked, remove the frybread from the oil and drain it on paper towels to absorb excess grease. Navajo Fry bread is traditionally served in Native American cuisine, offering a delicious addition to various meals.
  • For best results, verify that your oil is at the correct temperature before frying. If the oil is too cool, the frybread will absorb more oil and become greasy.
  • If it's too hot, the outside will cook too quickly while the inside remains raw.
  • Additionally, feel free to experiment with toppings or variations of the recipe, such as adding spices or using different types of flour.
  • Enjoy your frybread warm and fresh for the best flavor and texture!
